A story…

chance

A bad day for science… that’s how it’s called, the day when everything goes wrong! The alarm clock is not working, and instead of waking up at 6:30 a.m., Kate wakes up at 7 a.m., half an hour lost, so she has to rush things. The coffee machine has no more filters, so she cannot have her energy drink and go on with her morning routine. The food she has for breakfast seems to have a bad taste because of that. Clothes don’t look good on her anymore and she cannot seem to get her make-up right. It is a bad day from the start. But eventually Kate gets out of the house.

She misses the buss, and picks a cab instead, but the morning craziness makes the traffic a disaster. She has a meeting at 8:30 and karma just won’t help her today.

She just wanted to get to the office early so she could make some final adjustments to the presentation. Eventually, she gets there at about 8:25 and because of the lack of time, she just rushes in the conference room. Everyone is there waiting for her to explain the project; all eyes are staring at this poor girl. Kate cannot find her words and sentences with somewhat no sense come out of her mouth. She feels like she has a hangover or something and the world is just spinning around her. Eventually the meeting is over and the deal is signed, but she can’t remember much of what happened.

Plans for dinner are ruined by a late “important” conference call that her boss can’t take, because he has to go somewhere. Just great! Friday evening ruined, again. She finishes work at about 9 p.m. and goes home. Another day with no meaning, caught in the routine that destroys her life bit by bit.

No boyfriend, no house, no dog, nothing that she wished for, just money… That’s what she wanted, to earn a lot of money and be successful. She studied hard, learned and read a lot. She was always the best, but she lost a lot along the way.

Then she thinks: “what else is there, beside work?” Decides to call her boss and ask for a holiday, just for 3 days, after 12 years working in the same company, without any free time.

First day, she wakes up at 10 a.m., goes to buy some things she needs in her rented apartment. She stops at a coffee place instead and just enjoys her drink, without any e-mails, phone calls or any technology around. She sits at a table, and begins reading a book she started 5 times but was not able to finish, in the past 2 years… She realizes that life can be quiet and “not rushing” from time to time… She gives up the plans she made for the day and spends hours in a park, reading that book. People rushing around her, the world taking its course, everything speeding… she is just so quiet and feels so happy about the peace of mind she has…

Hours pass and she is finally able to finish the novel… It was good, but it was about a love story and full of romantic moments that never happened to her, or maybe they did, but she can’t remember when or how… She is really sad now…

I really love the above part. Also, most likely you will never reach the maximum in both personal and profesional live, so chosing as a goal to succed in either one of them seems to be mandatory. Important and the same time difficult is to choose what can make you happier. You can always make a compromise, but you end sacrificing one to the other. This is what most of us are doing…
